Playa Del Carmen or more commonly referred to as Playa is the largest city along the Mayan Riviera with an estimated 120,000 people. Playa was once a sleepy fishing village and now its rapid growth has earned it the reputation of being the fastest growing in Latin America. In fact it has doubled in size in the past few years, mostly due to Europeans who have discovered its white Alabaster Sands, gentle surf, coral reefs and slow lifestyle. The strong foreign influence has added to its Mexican/Caribbean ambiance and a sprinkling of American free-spirit, sums up the atmosphere of Playa.
Unlike the resort of Cancun, Playa has evolved its own unique identity. Construction is limited to 12 metres high, there are smaller hotels offering more personalized services and vibrant international community offers and eclectic mixture of restaurants and shopping to fit everyone’s budget. Playa del Carmen boasts miles of white sandy palm tree lined beaches, crystal clear waters, offering many watersports such as diving, wind surfing and snorkelling. It can be as tranquil or exhilarating as you make it, a perfect place for a holiday retreat.
